The weekend before Clarke's death, Pearson took him, by then wheelchair bound, five miles into the heart of the fens.[1] Hen and marsh harriers floated into view over the marshes, a final encounter with two bird species that had inspired his ornithological career.[1][2] Clarke was survived by his wife, Janis, and by a son and daughter.[1][2]
