Summer might be the season of mangoes for the rest of India, but for the pahadis, summers are synonymous with Kafals. The small berries turn dark red in colour when they ripe and have a sweet, tangy and juicy flavour to them. The hilly regions, especially Nainital, Almora and Ranikhet have the perfect climatic conditions that Kafal requires to grow. Mangoes can never grow in low temperature, whereas Kafals cannot survive in high temperature, making it very difficult to find both the fruits at the same place, at the same time. Thus, Kafal is the ultimate summer fruit for pahadis. (Image: istock)
